In February of 1990 Terri Schiavo suffered brain damage after her feel temporarily stopped. She remained in what many physicians considered a persistent vegetive state until her death in 2005. She had been maintaining nutritional status via a feeding tube which was removed at the request of her husband. He felt that there was no hope of rec overy or a decent quality of life. Her parents, on the other delve however; were livid and precious to gestate the tube replaced to stimulate Terris life. This situation sparked a huge controversy over whose right it is to determine when a person who is deemed to be in persistent vegetative states dies or at the least who is advocating for Terris best interest.
It is clear that both Terris parents and her husband were face up with an ethical dilemma, with her husband claiming that Terri had told him that she would not want to be uphold by life support and her parents claiming that she would not wish to bear the tube feeding discontinued. With no advance directives or existing will, it is obvious that both parties thought they knew exactly what Terri would have wanted an acted on that effect. This case study brings to light the ethical principles of autonomy, Beneficence, nonmaleficence and justice.
Autonomy: autonomy stems from cognition therefore with Terri being in a Persistent vegetative state, she has lost all rights to be come to in her plan of care. She would have been the only one who sincerely knew what she wanted if an advance directive was also written other than her surrogate Michael Schiavo, her husband who claimed that she would not have wanted to be kept alive by life support failed to view the standards of substitute judgment meaning that he completely handle her wishes thus violated her autonomy for many years onwards deciding to do what he thought his wife would have wanted.
