Learning to Read, a passage from Malcom Xs autobiography, is a reflection on his homemade education he deliver the goods while incarcerated in the late 1940s. He struggled at first, but eventually adopted a pattern that enabled him to grasp the meaning and pronunciation of nearly every word in the book. This drive to learn ignited an even greater passion to read different books on a all-inclusive variety of subjects including African and European history, the evolution of man, and atrocities committed by the British on India and China. At this point Malcolm was hooked. To him, there were not enough hours in the day to read. An example of this was the fact Malcolm risked getting caught by the guards for staying awake well past the prison curfew provided to read.
