I wish to reply to Greg McNeals article, ESPN Uses Chink in the Armor Line in dickens ways, published on Forbes.com. McNeal states that we need to gather our bearings because the Jeremy Lin inspired Linsanity phenomena has started to nark ugly and I agree with him that we do.
First, the on-air commentary was a some days before the headline came out but ESPN headst superstar Max Bretos was suspended for 30 days subsequently apply the phrase when asking New York Knicks legend Clyde Frazier if Lin had any chinks in his armor. Now having said that, the headline post along with the on-air commentary are both going to seem discourtesy when used to describe anything referring to a person of Asian decent.
Second, the two men have may seem like tremendous people now but there intentions were surely good. The guts was asking an NBA legend his opinion on the young draw a bead on fight back. The phrase means to have a flaw or problem preventing success. The word chink itself means slit, fissure or weak point that can leave on vulnerable. Bretos was seeking out Lins weakness as viewed by a retired player. The headline was to grab attention but it was also referring to Lins 9 turnovers in the gamey that ended the 7 game winning streak.
Last but non least, ESPN has used this one phrase twice in one week. Not to come to they have used it before and others like it. ESPN News mainstay Todd Grisham used the phrase Trial of Tears to describe the fans after the Oklahoma Sooners lost to Texas Tech in a collegiate football game. The historical reference is to the Cherokee Native Americans were forced from their the three estates in Georgia to Oklahoma.
In conclusion, the Knicks have had a groovy stretch of games, their young point guard is performing precise well against tough competition and they are 7-1 through their brave out 8 games after the loss.
