This paper, a review of Albert Speers Inside The Third Reich, discusses: his qualifications for writing the book; why Speer found Hitler sympathetic; and Speers position of responsibility and contrition for what occurred in Hitlers Germany. Speers responsibility and guilt, and an assessment of the most valuable contributions he made to our knowledge of Hitler and national socialist Germany, are also discussed.
Speers Qualifications. Speer was Hitlers chief architect at the beginning of demesne War II. Speer was subsequently appointed minister of armaments in 1942, a position in which he served until the end of the war in 1945. As a member of Hitlers cabinet, Speer was an intimate check to Hitlers dictatorial rule, mental and physical decline, and the abuse of business leader by various Nazi officials - along with all of the tragic consequences. For his role in the war crimes perpetrated by the Nazis (i.e., his use of striver labor), Speer was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Nuremburg tribunal in 1946.



While serving his sentence in Spandau Prison, Speer reflected on his Nazi activities by penning some 1,200 pages of manuscript, often writing on anything he could find.
